Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 5/32 inches (2.94 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per saltire Or and Gules a caterpillar bendwise passant Vert.  Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed FIRE FOR EFFECT in Red letters.

Symbolism
The colors, red and yellow, are for Artillery.  The shield is taken from the insignia of the former 51st Field Artillery Battalion; the caterpillar is from the insignia of the 51st Coast Artillery Battalion:  thus representing both units in the present consolidated organization.  The caterpillar is symbolic of the tractor.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 51st Field Artillery Battalion on 26 December 1951.  It was redesignated for the 51st Artillery Regiment on 12 January 1959.  The insignia was redesignated for the 51st Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective 1 September 1971. The insignia was redesigned for the 51st Air Defense Artillery effective 26 April 2022.

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 51st Field Artillery Battalion on 26 December 1951.  It was redesignated for the 51st Artillery Regiment on 12 January 1959.  It was amended to correct the designation of the original approval on 4 December 1962.  The insignia was redesignated for the 51st Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective 1 September 1971. The insignia was redesigned for the 51st Air Defense Artillery effective 26 April 2022.
